Gems Miro
12 Onslow Road, Lake Hayes Estate

Our Centre
This centre is located in the heart of Lake Hayes Estate close to the playground, tennis courts and pump track. This purpose built building is spacious, light and airy, with under floor heating and acoustically considered spaces. It is a well resourced and set up with a nature-focused stimulating environment.

Our centre
Gems Miro is a special place for children to learn. The wide open spaces and beautiful natural environment create a calm and inspiring space for children to explore and grow. The seamless indoor-outdoor flow allows tamariki to move freely, while the playgrounds, including forts and other creative play spaces, spark imagination and adventure. We are a strong, close-knit teaching team that supports one another every day, and we value the meaningful relationships we build with whānau, working in genuine partnership to support each child. Everything we do is guided by the Gems values, with the Pikler approach and philosophy at the heart of our practice, and a belief that the environment is the third teacher.
Our offerings
Where Learning and Play Go Hand in Hand
Food Offering
Gems Miro provides a hot cooked lunch each day, while children bring a small lunchbox with their own morning and afternoon tea. This balance encourages independence and helps children develop healthy eating habits.
For a fully catered experience, Gems Rātā and Kōwhai offer nutritious meals and snacks throughout the day.

Nature Play Programme
Nature Play is Gems’ take on the Scandinavian Forest School model, offered fortnightly to all 4–5 year olds. It’s a day of outdoor adventure, exploring Queenstown’s lakes, forests, hills, and meadows. As part of our school transition programme, it builds self-management, social skills, and resilience. Led by our dedicated Nature Play Lead Teacher, the programme also welcomes family and parent helpers to join the fun.

two dedicated spaces
At all Gems centres, we have dedicated spaces for children of different ages. The Nest and The Hive are specifically designed to help your child flourish, with inviting indoor areas and natural outdoor environments that encourage exploration, curiosity, and a deep connection with nature.

The Nest
Purpose-built for under-twos, this space nurtures their growth and development in a safe environment that encourages learning at their own pace.

The Hive
The Hive offers over-twos a place to grow and thrive, with rich learning experiences inside and outside every day.
Food Offering
At Gems Miro, we provide a freshly cooked hot lunch every day, prepared with little tummies in mind. Alongside this, children bring a small lunchbox with their own morning and afternoon tea. This balance gives children the comfort of familiar foods from home, while also encouraging them to try new meals when sharing the experience with their friends. Parents often find this makes mealtimes at home a little easier, too!
For families who prefer a fully catered option, Gems Rātā and Gems Kōwhai take care of everything.
We cater for all food intolerances, eversions and special diets without any additional charge.

Nature Play Programme
Nature Play is Gems’ unique version of the Scandinavian concept of Forest School. One day a fortnight all of our 4-5 year olds have the opportunity partake in our Nature Play days.
It is a day of exploration and adventure, where our tamariki experience the wonders of our local environment, and are fully immersed in Queenstown’s stunning landscapes. We go everywhere from the lakeside to the forests, from the hills to the meadows.
Nature Play is an integral part of our transition to school programme, where the focus is on building self-management skills, social competencies and resilience as our tamariki journey towards the next step in their education.
Gems Nature Play programmes are coordinated by our fantastic Nature Play Lead Teacher, who manages the programme across the organisation. It is a day enjoyed by all age groups - we welcome visiting family (grandparents are a familiar sight), and parent helpers as it gives you the chance to adventure alongside your wee one in the great outdoors.
